Kanye West: Fashion Fail
11/10/2011
It’s not so much that it was absolutely godawful (which it mostly was), it’s just so disappointingly unoriginal and oblivious to what is relevant in fashion, or flattering in general.
Kanye West debuted his first collection as a fashion designer in Paris Fashion Week about a week ago. It was essentially a gaudy, mislead, messy attempt at creating a “cool” and “glamorous” feel. His thought process seemed to have been something among the lines of “Let’s slap a bit of fur on this” and “Ooh, let’s put an asymmetrical hem on that one! So edgy!”.
I don’t even know where to begin with this metallic monstrosity. Those pants! The back of those pants! What on earth is going on over there?!
I can’t recall seeing a single look that wasn’t terrible or terribly derivative, and not even successfully so. The models’ hair and makeup was supposed to have a carelessly cool vibe, I’m assuming, but it didn’t quite translate as such. It just ended up making them (and the garments) look even cheaper; I mean, it takes quite a lot of talent to make top models Anja Rubik and Chanel Iman look cheap and second-rate.
Here’s an awful look which is basically a sluttier, ill-proportioned knockoff of the iconic Hervé Léger bandage dress, a variation of which is shown below from the Fall 2010 collection. Or maybe he was attempting what Neil Barett did in Spring 2011, also shown below. Could you guess which look is Kanye’s?
And then there’s the cleavage and fit issues. And please take a look at those pants, because every girl wants a shocking red teardrop shape right in the center of her ass. And slice the pants up at her thighs just for added flattery. Oh, add a zipper too! Those are cool! And edgy! Unzip it from the bottom! And add a slap of fur on the side for good measure! Wow!
And of course, there’s the fur backpack. I don’t even know where to begin with this. $O LUXURIOU$$$!
He claims that he gave it “everything he had”, “meant the clothes to fit that way” and “plans to change the course of fashion” with this collection. Right.
When asked about his collection, Anna Wintour had the most amazing response, hands down:
I urge Kanye to hire someone else.

Totally agree – what killed me the most were those hideous metallic pants. I just don’t get them.
What I don’t get even more is why Carine Roitfeld and Anna Dello Russo are supporting him.
I don’t get it either. I think it’s probably the celebrity novelty factor.
I like some stuff and dislike others.. but it sure isnt cool and messy lol
There were some acceptable pieces, but they were so poorly tailored and blatantly referenced from other designers…
He also needs to work on editing and refining his looks.
Racist!
Seriously and ironically some celebrities think anything they would do deserve applauding !
He was wrong , I blame people who really care about him and asked him to go with that!
It’s a fashion disaster , the mood of this collections is all over the place!!
I have no idea how he calls this a collection, very messy and has nothing to do with elegance or luxury!
Thanks for the post . I agree with you Aziz.
Thanks for the comment! My thoughts exactly… even for a celebrity collection, it’s one of the worst I’ve seen.
When I first saw the collection I didn’t know where to begin, but I’ve narrowed it down; the two things that bother me MOST (it all bothers me) are how badly/unflatteringly tailored the clothing is and how “thrown-together” the whole collection seems. There’s no theme, there’s no “vibe” and the entire mess of it just does nothing for me.
Everything was ripped off and ended up looking super-cheap – which it shouldn’t! If he knew anything about womenswear in the first place there would be no excuse for how awfully draped it all was, but since it’s clear that he doesn’t know anything about it I guess we’ll… wait till next year? :/
I completely agree! The fit was the most awful thing, and there was no cohesion or story with the clothes whatsoever; it just looked like they were trying really hard to be cool (and failing).
I think he’s “influential” enough to get a much better team for next season, to lift up this mess into something a bit more refined, but I somehow doubt it because of how arrogant and opinionated he is in general. I also can’t help but wonder how much fur he’ll slap on to them for Autumn/Winter.
I wonder why he tried to venture into the one industry which criticizes everyone for anything. When he is notorious for being a big baby that can’t handle criticism. I’m disappointed at fashion week for allowing him to show when there are much more deserving unknown TALENTED designers.
I think kanye should stick to what he does best, throwing hissy fits and making a fool of himself.
Unfortunately, pretty much anyone can show at fashion week if they can cover the expenses or get sponsorship. I’m assuming he’s being covered in most major fashion websites due to the novelty factor of a celebrity-turned-designer.
