Minecraft is a game that starts you off in a fluffy, blocky universe with daisies and roses and jumping pigs. A non-threatening universe for you to build and make your own. Literally, EVERY block in this game can be moved or changed somehow.

Think of it as a Lego game, but on crack (ok enough of the drug references already). The game does not give you any instructions, there are no objectives to speak of. Its a blocky simulation of you on an island of some sort.

The game creates a randomly generated world for you when you start.

So where was I? Yes, jumping pigs and cows and colorful blocks of green and stone. That is until night comes and zombies and vampires and snake and other stuff comes to kill you and they will find you and they will kill you and they will take away all your things.

So what do you do exactly?

But that is not the purpose of the game, the purpose of the game is to create shelter. You have about 8-10 minutes to create your first shelter out of the blocks, and wait until morning comes again. You have to hide out in your shelter so you can make a better one the next morning, using better blocks and when the time comes you can move to a better place. Maybe build a lodge cabin on top of a mountain? or a nice glass house by a garden. Or maybe a beach house overlooking your man made island of vegetation.

There are 1000′s of combinations in the game, you can for example, create a ‘hoe’ out of wood and sticks. Or you can make an ‘furnace’ out of rock and coal. You need to experiment, that is the purpose of the game. Here is an example of what can be accomplished with the game.

A Metropolitan City that took weeks to make

Pfft, this sounds boring. This isn’t Jersey Shore! I can’t laugh at blocks?

Dude, chill out. It’s not for everyone. It really was built with one particular group in mind. Even though the creator of the game Notch says in the about page of the game on the official website “if it’s no fun, I’ll redesign it [game]” it really is a game for a specific type of people. People like the fellow you can find bellow.

But that is not even the tip of the iceberg. Because of the way the game was built, and because the physics engine is really sophisticated in the game. Some people have created amazing things in it. A person by the handle ‘internetftw’ on youtube created a computer, an honest down to earth 16-bit ALU processor. Here is a video of him going through the processor. A FRICKEN COMPUTER PROCESSOR.

No one was tanned in that video, why am I still reading this?

OK, so I did say the game is not for everyone. But I really think there is a lispy geek inside all of us, waiting to be unleashed. You don’t have to create an ALU 16-Bit processor to enjoy this game, heck no. The game is stupid, time draining fun! But you will have to invest some time trying to learn it and I say its worth it.

Does it at least have fist pumping?

No. The classic outdated version of the game can played for free on the website. If you would like to try out the premium version with the newly released ‘Adventure Update’ then it’ll cost you around 6 kd. Even if you are not interested in gaming, I really suggest you give this a shot. It is a beautiful sandbox of a game where, really, you are only limited by your imagination.
